Custom Printed Boxes for Retail and E-commerce

Custom printed boxes for retail and e-commerce are either corrugated mailers or paperboard folding cartons, and the two are made from different board on different lines. Corrugated mailer boxes carry an order through a courier network on their own; paperboard folding cartons present a product on a shelf and travel inside a shipper.

This category is for e-commerce and subscription brands, retail and FMCG brand owners, and bakery, confectionery and dry-food producers who need one or both.

Custom printed boxes compared: corrugated mailer boxes for shipping orders and paperboard folding cartons for shelves. Pick the right box type, then the specs.

Custom Printed Mailer Boxes

One-piece die-cut corrugated boxes, usually in the FEFCO 0427 roll end tuck front style, that ship flat, close without tape and go into the postal or courier network as the outer pack. Typical buyers are D2C, apparel, cosmetics and subscription brands. The key decision is the flute (E flute is the usual default, B flute for heavier contents, F flute for small premium or letterbox formats), followed by liner colour and print method.

Custom Printed Folding Cartons

Printed paperboard boxes, typically 250-450 gsm, that are erected at the packing point and sold on the shelf: cosmetic cartons, confectionery and bakery boxes, tea, coffee and dry-food packs. The key decision is the board grade (virgin-fibre FBB, solid bleached SBS or recycled WLC), which then limits print, finishing and food-contact options, followed by the carton style and how it will be packed.

Mailer box or folding carton: which do you need?

Start with how the box travels. If it must survive parcel sortation and a delivery van without an outer carton, it is a corrugated mailer. If it sits on a shelf, in a display or inside another box, it is a folding carton.

Two cases cause most confusion. A heavy or bulky item usually ships more cheaply in a plain slotted shipping carton than in a printed mailer; the trade-offs are set out in mailer box vs shipping box vs poly mailer. And a folding carton that looks sturdy on the desk is still not built for parcel networks, so a retail pack sold online normally needs an outer shipper or a mailer of its own.

Buying guides for mailer boxes and folding cartons

One regulatory point affects box sizing for EU shipments. Regulation (EU) 2025/40, the PPWR, limits empty space in grouped, transport and e-commerce packaging to 50 %, applying from 1 January 2030 or three years after the Commission's calculation methodology is adopted, whichever is later. The obligation falls on the business that fills the pack, so size mailers and inserts around the products rather than adding void fill later. The PPWR guide explains the wider rules; confirm your own obligations with your compliance scheme.

Box terminology by market

German-speaking buyers often search "Kartons bedrucken" for both families, then narrow to Faltschachtel (folding carton) or Versandkarton (shipping box); Dutch buyers use vouwdoos and verzenddoos, and UK buyers often say "bespoke boxes" for a custom size or structure. Each hub lists the full local terms.

For bakery chains that need cake, pastry and doughnut cartons alongside bags and cups, the bakery packaging page shows the whole set.

A box quotation is only comparable when every supplier prices the same board, style, dimensions and print. The packaging RFQ guide lists what to send; order quantities and cost drivers are covered separately. When the brief is ready, contact us with internal product dimensions, weights and artwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mailer box and a folding carton?

A mailer box is made from corrugated board, with a fluted middle layer that gives crush resistance, and is designed to travel through courier networks on its own. A folding carton is made from solid paperboard, prints at higher detail and is designed for shelf display, usually travelling inside a shipping case.

Can one box work for both retail shelves and online orders?

Sometimes. A printed E flute mailer can sit on a shelf if the store accepts its footprint, but a folding carton generally needs extra protection when shipped to consumers. Brands selling through both channels often use a folding carton for the shelf and a plain or lightly printed shipper for online orders.

Which box type is easier to recycle?

Neither has a built-in advantage: both corrugated mailers and paperboard cartons go into the paper and board stream in most European collection systems. Recyclability is mainly affected by what is added: plastic windows, foam inserts, heavy laminations or metallised foils. Keep inserts and finishes in paper-based materials where the design allows.
