Custom Printed Plastic and Flexible Packaging

Custom printed flexible packaging at 9 Packaging covers two different purchases. Printed plastic bags carry or ship goods that already have their own packaging: shopping bags, merchandise bags and poly mailers. Stand-up pouches are the product's own sales pack, filled with coffee, snacks, pet food or supplements and sealed.

Retail, fashion and e-commerce brands mostly buy the first; food and consumer-goods brand owners mostly buy the second.

Products in this category

Custom printed flexible packaging: polythene carrier and mailing bags or laminated stand-up pouches. Choose the right format, then check the rules that apply.

Custom Printed Plastic Bags

Polythene carrier bags with die-cut, patch, soft loop or vest handles, plus flat and gusseted merchandise bags and peel-and-seal mailing bags. Buyers are typically fashion and retail stores, events and trade shows, garden and outdoor retail, and online shops shipping apparel. The key decisions are the film (HDPE for thin vest bags, LDPE or LDPE/LLDPE blends for softer retail bags, recycled PE where recycled content is needed) and the thickness, which also decides which national bag rules apply.

Custom Printed Stand-Up Pouches

Laminated or mono-material pouches that stand on the shelf, often with a zipper, tear notch, window or degassing valve. Buyers are coffee roasters and cafés, and brands selling nuts, snacks, tea, pet food, supplements and some liquids. The key decision is the structure: how much oxygen and moisture barrier the product needs, weighed against the recyclability grade the pack will need in the EU from 2030. Format, features, size and print follow from it.

A simple test: if the customer opens the pack to use the product inside it, you need a pouch; if the customer carries or receives something in it and the bag is discarded or reused, you need a bag.

Which rules affect printed plastic bags and pouches?

Both products face tightening rules, mostly tied to thickness for bags and to recyclability and recycled content for all plastic packaging. In the EU, Directive (EU) 2015/720 requires Member States to reduce use of lightweight plastic carrier bags (below 50 µm), so the same bag can be free, charged or banned depending on the country. Regulation (EU) 2025/40, the PPWR, has applied since 12 August 2026; from 1 January 2030 it restricts very lightweight plastic carrier bags (with exceptions), requires packaging to meet a recyclability grade, and, from that date at the earliest, sets minimum recycled content for plastic packaging. In the UK, plastic packaging with less than 30 % recycled plastic is liable for Plastic Packaging Tax, and England charges for single-use plastic carrier bags up to 70 µm.

Obligations depend on whether you are the brand owner, importer or retailer, so confirm them with the competent authority or your compliance scheme. The detail sits in plastic carrier bag regulations in the EU, UK and US and the PPWR guide; for pouch design under the 2030 grades, see recyclable mono-material pouches.

Buying guides for plastic bags and pouches

Local search terms differ: German buyers look for "Plastiktüten bedruckt" for bags and "Standbodenbeutel" for stand-up pouches, Austrians say Plastiksackerl, and Dutch buyers use "stazak" for a stand-up pouch. Café chains and roasters that sell beans alongside drinks will find pouches placed in a full set on the coffee shop packaging page.

Flexible packaging quotes vary most with film structure, dimensions, colours and run length, so fix those before comparing prices. The packaging RFQ guide sets out what to send, and order quantities explains how print method affects run length. Then contact us with the product, fill weight or load, markets of sale and artwork.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as flexible packaging?

Flexible packaging is any pack made from film, foil, paper or a laminate of these that changes shape when filled or handled, as opposed to rigid boxes, bottles or tubs. Carrier bags, mailing bags, pouches, sachets and wrappers all fall under the term.

Are kraft paper pouches part of this category?

Yes. A kraft-look pouch is usually paper laminated to a plastic sealant layer and often a barrier layer, so it is specified and printed like other laminated pouches. The paper face changes appearance, not the need to choose a barrier and to check how the combined structure is treated for recycling.

Can the same film be used for a carrier bag and a pouch?

Generally not. Carrier bags are usually single-layer or co-extruded polyethylene chosen for strength and handle performance. Pouches are normally printed laminates built for barrier, sealing and shelf presence. Mono-PE pouches use the same polymer family as many bags, but the film structure is very different.
