Custom Printed Paper Bags

Custom printed paper bags fall into three families that look alike on a pallet but are specified for different jobs: handled carrier bags that take goods out of a shop, takeaway bags that carry a whole food order, and handle-free food bags that hold a single portion in direct contact with the food.

Buyers are usually retail and restaurant chains, bakeries, quick-service and delivery operators, and the distributors who supply them. Pick the family first, because grade, construction and compliance questions all follow from it.

9 Packaging is a B2B printed packaging manufacturer and exporter based in Istanbul, Türkiye, with experience supplying fast-food and chain-style foodservice operations. Each product page below sets out the full specification for its bag type.

Custom printed paper bags by job: handled carrier bags for retail, takeaway bags for whole food orders and paper food bags for single portions. Pick your type.

Custom Printed Paper Carrier Bags

Handled bags for retail checkouts, restaurant front-of-house sales, events and gift use, either machine-made from kraft (typically around 70-130 gsm) with twisted or flat paper handles, or hand-finished on heavier coated paper with rope or ribbon handles. The key decision is construction combined with grammage and handle type, since together they set how much weight the bag carries and what it costs per unit.

Custom Printed Takeaway Bags

Paper bags that carry a complete order from counter, drive-thru or rider to the customer: SOS (self-opening) bags with or without flat handles, and wide-base delivery bags. The food is usually already boxed or wrapped, so the critical specification is the base footprint matched to your boxes and drinks carriers, followed by paper weight, steam and grease behaviour, and tamper-evident closure for delivery.

Custom Printed Paper Food Bags

Handle-free bags in direct contact with food: flat and side-gusset bakery bags, SOS mini bags, fries cones, open-end döner and hot dog bags, and window bags. They are typically light MG or MF kraft or greaseproof paper, so the main decision is the grease barrier matched to the food, together with food-contact documentation and a PFAS-free specification.

Which custom printed paper bag do you need?

Start with what goes into the bag and how it leaves the premises. If you are unsure, the rule is simple: goods or gifts go in a carrier bag, a boxed or multi-item food order goes in a takeaway bag, and food that touches the paper goes in a food bag.

Many foodservice operators buy two or three of these families at once, for example a printed bakery bag inside a handled takeaway bag. Specifying them together keeps colours consistent across different papers.

Buying guides for paper bags

A note on terms: in the UK a "carrier bag" is a retail bag and a "takeaway bag" carries food orders; German buyers search for Papiertragetasche (handled) or Papiertüte and Bäckertüte (unhandled), Austrians for Sackerl, and Dutch buyers for papieren draagtas or papieren zak. Each hub lists the full terms for its market.

Once you know the bag type, open its hub for the specification checklist. To compare suppliers on equal terms, prepare your request with the packaging RFQ guide, then send your bag requirements with quantities per size, the destination market and your artwork.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different supplier for carrier bags, takeaway bags and food bags?

Not necessarily. One manufacturer can often supply several types, but each family runs on different bag-making machinery and paper grades. Ask whether each bag type is produced in-house and confirm that colour standards can be matched across the different papers before consolidating a programme with one supplier.

Which bag type should a bakery-café order for a pastry and a coffee to go?

Usually two items: a paper food bag, flat or side-gusset, that touches the pastry, and a cup carrier or small handled takeaway bag for the drink and any boxed items. If customers often buy several items, a handled takeaway bag with a wide base can carry the food bags and a cup carrier together.

Can one printed design work across carrier, takeaway and food bags?

Yes, as a brand system, but the artwork usually needs adapting. Carrier bags have large flat panels, takeaway bags are often printed with one or two flexo colours on kraft, and food bags are thin papers where ink coverage and print side are limited. Plan one colour standard and approve drawdowns on each actual paper.

Are paper bags always the better choice than plastic bags?

No. Paper suits most retail and food orders, but wet, heavy or chilled loads can favour plastic, and in some markets bag charges or reuse rules also cover paper. Compare both on your actual use with the paper vs plastic takeaway bag guide before deciding.
